Green eco-touristic 4 to 5 stars resorts
Establishing sustainable green eco-touristic 4 to 5 stars resorts in Sri Lanka.
A 25-room chalet type green eco-resort spread across an area of 4 acres in the Dutch Bay Island, Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka that mimics the local authenticity of the area and Sri Lanka in general.
Located in the North Western Province in Sri Lanka, Kalpitiya is an upcoming and developing tourism destination in the country.
Kalpitiya remains an important attraction from ecological, physical, archeological and socio-cultural standpoint with the full tourism potential of the destination being hardly explored at present.
Considering the unique features of this area we have proposed a 25 room property in order to ensure minimal disturbances to the natural environment and also to ensure that an optimal experience is given to the clients.
Additionally given the nature of the land area in the proposed location, it would be unfeasible to construct the property in an area less than the proposed 4 acre margin in order to ensure that the physical carrying capacity of the place is not exceeded.
In addition to the above, to truly make this green eco-touristic resort in line with the values of the triple bottom line we also propose the below actions, ideologies as they would allow this resort to encompass the holistic idea of making this hotel an eco-friendly green resort:
To improve resource efficiency (Design perspective)
- Build an in-house Solar farm to generate the electricity requirement of the hotel
- Rainwater harvesting to reuse water
- Desalination plant to optimally use water resources
- Mini Sewage Treatment Plants on Individual chalets for waste water treatment
- Designing to enhance natural lighting & natural ventilation to optimize and reduce energy consumption
- Usage of locally sourced, environmentally friendly materials for construction
Environmental Sustainability
Mangrove planting and conservation project with the active participation of the community and guests
- Organic garden to source in house fruits and vegetables
- Elimination of single use plastic usage throughout the property
- In-house Compost producing plant using the hotel’s organic waste as the base
- On-site and/or intra-company recycling efforts (One of our resorts already has an in-house paper recycling plant which recycles the entire paper based waste of the hotel collection)
- Conducting biodiversity conservation related research in the area (We already have a dedicated sustainability arm named BERI [Biodiversity Educational Research Initiative] which focuses on conducting biodiversity research across the country)
- Usage of recyclable toiletries and amenities
Social sustainability

- Job creation for locals – It will be nearly possible to source 60-80% of the hotel’s total staff requirement from the local community
- Local sourcing – It will be nearly possible to source 50-60% of the hotel’s day to day requirement from the local suppliers
- Community upliftment projects specifically aimed at locals (Our longstanding CSR arm R.e.V. already sponsors and manages 4 IT and English language centres across the country for marginalized communities in rural areas of Sri Lanka. Another chapter of R.e.V. could easily be launched in this region with the support of generous donors)
